Getting Healthy with Joy

Exercise with Joy

I'm Joyce (Joy) Edwards, a Certified Fitness Professional. In the coming weeks, we are going to cover some very important topics that you won't want to miss. You will read articles that stress health and fitness issues that affect most of us.

Now, let's talk about Water (H20) and its importance in our lives and how it helps our bodies to function properly. Did you know that water is the nutrient that we probably don't get enough of? Do you know that when you're thirsty, you are probably already dehydrated? Why, water is involved in almost every process that is essential for life.

   Here's some facts about water:

makes up about 60% of your body weight
   your blood is 90% water
   the brain is 85% water
   muscle is 72% water
   skin is 71%
   bone is 30%
   fat is 15%

Water also washes toxins from the body by providing the cellular moisture you need to help your kidneys filter your blood. When you exercise, you need substantially more fluid intake to balance your fluid loss. That means you should drink water before you exercise, during, and after exercising depending on your tolerance. Water also helps with muscle contraction, makes digestion possible, and maintains your body temperature as it eliminates heat, and rids the body of waste. So let's keep our bodies hydrated at all times (not just summer) by drinking water.

The next time we meet we'll talk about Weight Management...

2007 Colinthia Gosa Scholarship

X-traordinary Women

On Tuesday, 5/29/07 the ladies of X-traordinary Women attended the awards ceremony for Howard High School of Technology and presented the first of what we hope to be an annual event, 2007 Colinthia Gosa Scholarship. This scholarship is honoring a great educator who continues to go to great strides to help our young black adolescents striving for positive and successful heights in their life.

Although, Mrs. Gosa was unable to attend the ceremony in person, there were plenty of staff and faculty on hand that remembered her legacy and could attest to the remarks delivered by Nicole, President of X-traordinary Women, who was supported on stage by ten of her members and stated, "Anyone that knows Mrs. Gosa can attest that she places great emphasis on continued education, along with the importance of dignity and self-esteem in our ladies."

X-traordinary Women would like to again congratulate, Arielle Baines. She was the awarded Howard High School of Technology winner of the 2007 Colinthia Gosa Scholarship award, and a check for $1000 will sent to the college designated by Arielle!

To find out how you can help another young lady pursue their dreams of a college degree in 2008, you can contact the Nicole Simmons at 302-420-3700, or send your charitable donations for the Colinthia Gosa Scholarship payable to:
