Miss Black Delaware: Lauren Parkes

Miss Black Delaware

Miss Black Delaware USA 2007, Lauren Parkes, was born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland. Lauren ventured to Newark, Delaware in 2005 where she began her undergraduate career at the University of Delaware. It was there that Lauren became involved with her mew-fangled community and began volunteering for the Greater Newark Boys and Girls club and the Big Brothers and Big Sisters organization of Delaware. It was also during this time that Lauren fell in love with the first state and decided to compete in the Miss Black Delaware USA Pageant.

No stranger to pageantry, Lauren has competed in such pageants as Miss Maryland Teen USA 2004, Miss Maryland Teen Coed 2005, Miss Maryland USA 2007, and her recent endeavors Miss Black Delaware USA 2007 and Miss Black USA. Representing the state of Delaware across the United States and in Africa, Lauren has deemed it important to teach our youth that they can accomplish their dreams and stay true to themselves in the process of doing so. She believes that it is necessary that we show faith in our youth and as role models continuously strive to break down barriers whether they be gender, race, or age related.

Empowering others to accomplish and pursue their dreams, it has always been Lauren’s dream, since she was a little girl, to compete in the Miss USA system (owned by Donald Trump). Finally taking the steps to fulfill one of her life dreams, Lauren is gearing up to compete in the Miss Delaware USA Pageant in November 2007. Striving to make a difference in her contiguous community, Lauren is indebted to the Diamond State.

Interview with Dr. Alan Tillotson, PHD, AHG, Medical Herbalist Chrysalis Natural Medicine Clinic, Wilmington, DE

There has been a lot of talk lately about prescription drugs; where they come from, whether they are counterfeit or not, cost, and so on. So, I decided to ask Dr. Tillotson some questions about the functions of the body and what people can do to help prevent illness using alternative medicine.

He believes that co-existence between science and nature is the surest road to health. Virtually all systems of herbal medicine hold that one must respect the healing power of nature and the teachings of our herbalist ancestors.

Q: What are signs your body isn’t functioning properly?

A: While there are hundreds of symptoms associated with various diseases, common signs of impending poor health often missed are fatigue with no obvious cause, intestinal gas and bloating, and emotional irritability. Other signs that can often be diagnosed by a qualified natural medicine practitioner include changes in tongue color or coating, tension or weakening of the pulse, and "fuzziness" of the vision that comes and goes.

Q: What does white sugar do to your body?

A: Excess amounts of white sugar stresses your glucose regulatory systems, increases triglycerides, adds unnecessary calories associated with weight gain, and too often replaces and decreases healthier choices such as fresh fruit. Stevia, Xylitol and Erythritol are sugar substitutes that are all natural and can be used without known side effects.

Q: What specific foods (to name a few) would you recommend a person eat daily to help insure good health?

A: Garlic, oregano, blueberries, pomegranate, carrots and red onions. They are rich in flavonoids, carotenoids and polyphenols good for health

Q: Are there any common illness among certain groups of men or is it based on a case-by-case basis?

A: Case by case, but we have developed specialized treatment with certain difficult diseases, such as glaucoma, multiple sclerosis, hepatitis C, diabetic retinopathy, sickle cell anemia and others.
